DICOM Validation

Are you already well advanced in implementing your DICOM interface? And now you´re beginning to have doubts as to whether it will work in the field? You are in distinguished and great company– every company building their DICOM expertise during the first implementation finds itself in this situation. In our test lab, we put your DICOM implementation through its paces – systematically and in a structured manner.

Conformance is a prerequisite for interoperability, but it is not the same thing. That’s why we don’t just focus on the strict requirements of the DICOM standard, but also consider well-established best practices that have proven effective in clinical workflows. As a result, you receive a detailed test report, which we review thoroughly with your development team. Upon request, we can then create your DICOM Conformance Statement.

FAQ

For a simple system (e.g. endoscope, ultrasound — images and videos) with standard interfaces (worklist, storage) and support for a Secure Transport Connection Profile (TLS), we offer a standardized fixed price, which you can request from us.

For more complex systems (multiple TLS profiles, numerous supported character sets, “Enhanced” DICOM objects, Structured Reports, etc.) we provide a customized offer based on your Conformance Statement or an interview —  usually at a fixed price.

Sending in hardware is a common practice that many of our customers prefer. However, there are alternatives. Often the software can be tested without the device — in that case, we install it in our Hyper-V environment. Remote access to a device on your premises is also possible, but requires firewall configuration on both sides.

We have experience with all three approaches and will work together to find the solution that best fits your product.

Practically everything! 😊
A complete list would go beyond the scope here, but in summary:
  • The conformity of your DICOM implementation with the standard’s requirements — including compliance with the IHE Scheduled Workflow (SWF.b) specifications
  • Practical usability (Conformance isn´t the same as interoperability)
  • The behavior of your DICOM network interface in case of communication partner errors
  • The accuracy of your DICOM Conformance Statement and their consistency with the actual implementation

You will receive a comprehensive “Validation Report” (in english), which lists all test cases and results of the network communication as well as a complete representation of the DICOM objects generated by your system (at module and attribute level) with all deviations from the DICOM requirements. A further section (“Other observations”) contains – without any claim to completeness – notes on the design of the GUI and any observations such as crashes or times when your application was unresponsive. The validation report therefore shows the discrepancies between your DICOM implementation and a “perfect” DICOM implementation. In order to evaluate the discrepancies (not everything that is not perfect necessarily needs to be fixed), we discuss all the results with your development team in a final meeting. You will also receive one PDF version of your DICOM Conformance Statement with comments regarding the requirements of DICOM Part 2 (“What should a Conformance Statement look like”) and consistency with the actual implementation.

Then we gladly do it for you. The surcharge depends on the complexity of your interface. As we can build on an existing foundation, the costs usually start at around 3,000 euros.

This is possible by arrangement and may also make sense. The extent to which this is cost-neutral depends on the number, type and frequency of the changes, as well as the required test scope for the repeated tests. If this is the case, we will discuss this transparently with you in the project.

Of course – The Validation Report is a complete test result from a specialized test laboratory. However, the Validation Report does not replace a DICOM Conformance Statement.

What we have realized for our customers

“softgate validated the DICOM interface of our PIEZOLITH 3000plus. The cooperation was friendly, efficient and fruitful – the validation report that softgate presented revealed some errors that would have caused serious problems in practical use. After we fixed the bugs and released the software, the DICOM interface of the PIEZOLITH 3000plus works reliably in many installations worldwide.”
